BX:Coltrane downtime/rebuild
The machine currently known as coltrane will soon have its memory upgraded substantially, and will be reinstalled with VMWare ESXi. Coltrane will be reinstalled as a Linux virtual machine running under the new ESXi installation. Taking over AFS fileserver duties will be several Solaris VMs running under ESXi with ZFS filesystems. This will enable us to spread home directories between several distinct fileservers, allowing greater concurrency and the ability to migrate fileservers between physical machines. ZFS with compression should also help us save disk space on the SAN.
This rebuild will most likely ocurr sometime around the end of February / beginning of March, pending full testing and deployment of the new AFS backup system, which is the last thing coltrane is currently responsible for.
